Poetry In The In-World

secondlife_logo

Poetry is alive and well in the metaverse. On any given day in the virtual world of Second Life (SL), there is a cache of events ranging from open mic, symposium and discussion through to workshop, recital and slam. The Blue Angel Poetry Dive Bar, which has been running weekly readings since 2006 – an age in Second Life – seems to be the most talked about establishment. But there are many others including Rhythm & Rhyme, Jaeger Poetry, Open Mic at The Village Theatre, and INKsters. A number of in-world publications are now available online, most notably Vitruvius, Arts Journal for The Metaverse who aim to “bring you a provocative mix of visual art, literature and commentary from artists, writers, and musicians who are currently working in “real life”, “Second Life”, or, in some cases, both.”

The SL literary mood is one of circumnavigation. Tired of bawdy submission policies and stuffy first life publications, inclusive communities of poets have emerged and continue to flourish in SL. It’s used as a stomping ground for emerging artists to test their armoury and as a frontier environment for the more established to broaden readership. Although a certain amount of time is required to acquaint yourself with Second Life, it’s certainly worthy of investigation, especially considering it has an average of 50,000 active users at any one time and over 1,000,000 total Residents.

Thanks for an interesting summary of writing on SL. Don’t forget the Written Word group on Cookie Island which has events most days for all writers from hobbyists to published authors. We’re probably the largest active group with over 800 members.

You can find out all about us on http://www.writtenword.org.uk where you can also find SLURLS for the venues. We have the biggest free exhibition of the SL year for writers soon – the Autumn Writers’ Exhibition, where usually about 200 writers and writing groups display their work and activities. We try to offer everything writers could need, no matter how new to it they are, or how far advanced they are as a bestseller. SL is a fantastic place for writers.

We have open mics, workshops for poetry and fiction, Sounds of Poems where hosts read poems for the audience, interviews with published authors on the televised show Meet an Author, and workshops offered by published authors with a fiction one starting soon. There are also reading events including a short story discussion group. It’s all completely non-income and totally free for writers at all levels including the newcomers and the bestsellers.

We’re starting groups for writers in other languages now, with a Spanish one called Castellatura just getting going. There’s always free space on the area for writers to display their work and we’ll help them make their books.

It’s a great sociable community for writers on Cookie Island. I’m filming people performing their poetry at the moment and you can get an idea about writing events on SL by watching some of the poets perform on http://www.youtube.com/writtenwordvideos

If you want to know more, or you’re a writer and need any help on SL contact me in-world as Jilly Kidd and find your way to our island on my Profile Picks.
